If you’ve been looking for ways to protect the exterior of your vehicle, you’ve probably come across both Paint Protection Film (PPF) and ceramic coating. While both are viable options, there are some key differences between the two to consider before moving forward with one or the other.
PPF, also known as a clear bra, is a layer of thick and flexible material applied on top of your car paint, which acts as a shield from potential blemishes and minor physical damage.
On the other hand, ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle’s factory paint, which protects your car from contaminants and keeps it clean.
In this article, we will discuss both the similarities and differences of PPF and ceramic coating, so you can decide which is the best fit for you.
The main similarity between PPF and ceramic coating is their ultimate purpose – which is to protect and maintain the exterior of your vehicle, so it remains in good condition.
Both of these services provide a protective layer from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Shielding your vehicle from UV rays will reduce the likelihood of fading and discoloration, as well as provide protection from acidic contaminants (like acid rain and other chemical damage).
Both PPF and ceramic coating have a clear finish, so you won’t have to worry about it affecting the appearance of your vehicle’s paint, (unless, of course, you choose a customization option).
Whichever you choose, both will ultimately add value to your vehicle by preserving the quality of the exterior with UV protection.
Regardless of the similarities between PPF and ceramic coating, there are some significant differences. At the end of the day, each serves their own individual purpose and has different benefits.
PPF is not only made of a thicker material, but it is also designed with self-healing technology, meaning that any surface-level paint damage (like a minor scratch or chip) will heal itself instantly or over time.
The urethane layer will flex and absorb any force of energy, which will provide the painted surface superior protection from road debris.
Ceramic coating may not have the same protective abilities as PPF, but it does provide a hydrophobic surface, meaning it can repel water. The hydrophobic properties are applied to the entire vehicle, whereas PPF you’ll choose the areas you want the film to be applied.
The ceramic coat ultimately enhances the day-to-day appearance of your vehicle, as it will be much easier to clean (no swirl marks or hard water spots!) and you won’t need to wax your vehicle for a sleek finish.
If you’re primarily looking for paint preservation, PPF is most likely the best option. Whereas if your goal is to enhance the appearance of your vehicle (with less maintenance), ceramic coating would be the right fit.
PPF and ceramic coating both offer valuable benefits with the ultimate goal to preserve your vehicle’s exterior appearance and maintain its value. Whichever service you choose, your vehicle will surely remain in better condition than without.
